Andrea Barschdorf-Hager

Andrea Barschdorf-Hager has been serving as CEO of CARE Austria in Vienna since 2009. In this role, she leads the marketing team and oversees program and finance areas, as well as the relief and development work. Andrea also represents CARE Austria in media and politics. CARE is one of the world’s leading development and humanitarian aid agencies, dedicated to fighting poverty and injustice, with a specific focus on the empowerment of women and girls.

Born in Vienna, Andrea began her involvement in development cooperation while studying Ethnology and African Studies at the University of Vienna and USP Sao Paulo. She is an International Gender Champion, Chair of the Humanitarian Governance Group of CARE International (HGG), Vice Chair of the Steering Committee for Humanitarian Response (SCHR), and a Principal of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC). Besides that she serves as a board member of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (OIIP). With her special focus on AI and digitalization, she is a member of the CARE USA AI Advisory Board. In 2024 and 2025, she served on the jury of the STARTS Prize Africa, in cooperation with Ars Electronica. Since 2021, she has been hosting the weekly “CARE in Action” podcast, which puts CARE’s work at the center of civil society. Andrea has received several awards and recognitions for her service.
